Civic Ensemble and the Community School of Music and Arts is thrilled to be launching its new partnership, The Beloved Artistic Community Meet Up!
The BAC Meet up will be providing free artistic workshops to community members ages 18 and up. Each month a guest artist will be offering a performative or expressive arts workshop to expand the artistic skills and practices of our local community. The hope is to cultivate a space for folks where growth in artistry and skills is centered that is accessible no matter your level of artistry. No experience necessary to join, only an openness to exploring something new in the community.
We hope this can be a space for folks to expand their artistic tool kit and continue fostering that theatre, expression and creation is everyone’s birthright.

Stand-Up Comedy & Humorous Storytelling

"Life's a joke, find the funny." -Kenneth McLaurin
Crowned Ithaca’s Best Comedian (2023), Kennth McLaurin will teach the basics of stand-up comedy and funny storytelling in this fun, interactive workshop.
We’ll learn how to write jokes, deliver punchlines, and turn our everyday experiences into laugh-out-loud moments. Perfect for beginners or anyone looking to build confidence and make their stories more entertaining!
As a North Carolina native, Kennth has long called himself, "The Funniest Person You've Never Heard Of." But his album and shows, “Cuttin' Up Comedy at the Shop”, “Southern Fried Ithaca” and his recent production “So You Think You’re Anti-Racist Competition” are rapidly changing that.
He’s performed for Comedy on The Commons and written plays for the One Minute Play Festivals at the Kitchen Theatre. His film 10 Short Films About Race was also featured as a part of the Spring Writes Literary Festival.
Witty, clever, insightful, sometimes shocking, but always funny is what you get with Kenneth!

Introduction to Physical Theatre [RESCHEDULED]

Our first meet-up will be led and taught by director, educator, and cultural worker Sarah Plotkin!

Sarah will be guiding us through the basics of physical theatre—a style of theatre that emphasizes movement as an important part of the storytelling. In this 90-minute workshop, we’ll explore different physical theater techniques through games and create original work in small groups.
No prior acting or movement training is needed, only an openness to exploring something new in the community. Though we welcome those with a physical theatre background to join us! Just make sure to wear clothes you’re comfortable moving in.

The workshop will also be accessible to adults of all ages and abilities. Please contact us know if you have specific access needs so we can make sure the space is accessible to you. On site childcare will also be made available.
