In April 2016, a group of Cornell Performing and Media Arts graduates, undergraduates, and community members put together an ensemble-based solo show entitled Speaking Out of Turn: A Feminist Story Circle, performed in Schwartz Center’s Black Box Theatre. The performance was framed as a workshop that emphasized the process of developing each woman’s story into a dramatic piece in collaboration with the other women in the group.

This September, Civic Ensemble is hosting a women’s performance workshop based on that model. The workshop is open to all women-identifying community members, students, and faculty. The workshop will culminate in a performance at the newly built Cherry Artspace in early May 2017. The workshop will be held once every two weeks for 2-3 hours. We will make every effort to supply childcare and rides to the workshop, as needed. The beginning stages of the workshop will focus on ensemble building and getting comfortable with each other. We will then shift to telling stories and acting them out. Finally, the last four weeks of the workshop will be focused on the production and shaping what we have done into a performance. Rehearsals during this time period may increase to 2-3 times a week.
