Jelani has just graduated with a BFA Acting degree from Ithaca College, and is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His first experience with the Civic Ensemble was a staged reading of Dream Acts, a collaboratively created play written by Chiori Miyagawa, Saviana Stanescu, Andrea Thome, Jessica Litwak, and Mia Chung about the journeys of a few individuals trying to find a better life by becoming US citizen. He played “Wahid” and the “Prison Guard” and they performed at both Ithaca College and NYU before the show moved on to other theatres around New York City. He later originated the role of “Kaleb” in the Civic Ensemble’s staged reading of Judy Tate’s Slashes of Light, which soon became a full production at the Kitchen Theatre that received rave reviews.  Jelani has also participated in the Civic Ensemble’s Civic Origins Program, which brought an adaptation of Antigone to Ithaca High School, along with workshops and classroom visits with the students. He is ever-grateful to the Civic Ensemble for bringing engaging, thought-provoking, community-based theatre to Ithaca!
